Each class of draftees was called forward in the year that they turned 18 and reported to their units in the fall, following completion of the harvest. Additionally, special call - ups brought in older men who had missed military service in the First World War and were now in their mid 30s. The goal was to insure that all German men had received military training and were either assigned to an active unit or a reserve division. Two years of active duty were required for the young draftees. The older, married men brought in during the special drafts were obligated for a single year of active duty | |
