Geoff Walden - Camp Lee Slideshow

Camp Lee remains largely intact today. Harry Owens has related that after the border mission ceased, Camp Lee was turned over to the local authorities and came to be used as a boy scout center. When Geoff Walden* passed through, the camp had most recently been in use as a refugee center for those fleeing the fighting in Kosovo, former Yugoslavia. When Geoff did his photo safari, the camp was padlocked [but it was easy to get inside, through a hole in the fence back by the wash rack]. You can see from the images, much is very recognizable ... gone is the arc sign at the main gate and the guard shack. Gone also, the building we would remember as the border ops center and briefing area replaced with a  clearly newer building. In the area of the barracks buildings, several additional prefabs were added. Remarkably unchanged, the former day room now with a forlorn " learning center " sign hanging on the end. The arms room was intact and amazingly, old documents from the days of the 2/11 were still taped to the wall ... this over nine years after the turnover of the property!  An aircraft warning beacon has been placed on the hardstand, The yellow racking use is unknown. A new gate guard building was added. There was no marker or indicator of the past history of the camp with exception of the sign on the Learning Center.  The commercial quarry which was well beyond the fence line by the hardstand and between the Camp and Wollbach has moved significantly closer to the fence.
