I have maintained a website about the Border legion for over 5 years. I have a collection of articles, clipart, persomnal photographs, contributed photographs, items of interest, sound files, all included in a MS-Frontpage developed website. The site addess is http://borderlegion.topcities.com. I have had the site on four different "Free" ISPs. Unfortunately, providing free webspace isn't a big money maker, and each one has slowly passed to the way side. Who is you ISP? Topcities used to provide 150 Mb of disk space for free, but it seems that I will have to find a service and pay to have the site back on the net. Maybe I can seek contributions, or possibly web could do something jointly. I have content that I haven't had time to add to the site, and it already is about 50 Mb in size (inclusive of all the MS-Frontpage buttons and management files). Give me a shout if you have any ideas.

I got your letter in the mail this week, and was hglad to see some interest in this topic. It seems to have been slow in coming though. I had even offered my contenet to tbe included in the 11th ACR museum at Ft Irwin, along with other memorbilia, maps and so forth. I couldn't get eany one interested in the past of the Regiment, they seem focused on the NTC mission now.

Anyway, see you later and drop me a line of ideas.

I never served in the Eaglehorse squadron, but in 1979 my artillery battalion (a 175mm gun battalion in 41st FA Brigade) did some training on the M109A1's of How Battery, 2/11, at Wildflecken training area. Our battalion commander thought it would be good training for the gun crews and FDCs to work on the 155mm system, since our guns were limited to one shell, one fuze, and three charges. (It was one of the FEW good ideas he ever had!) I recall that our hosts in How battery were very gracious. It was interesting to see the projectile reach the summit of its trajectory and still be able to follow it until it disappeared behind a ridge on the descending branch -- something we never could do with the 175s!

Enjoyed the site and look for more great things to come.

Mike Simms, COL DJH Pittard is not running it yet, but working at it. After a stint at the Clinton WH, he was selected to develop doctrine for the new Striker Bdes. We had 114 A/Cavs with 20mm cannons. Before I left though we were training with Sheridian Tanks.
I did basic in Ft. Ord
I did AIT in Ft. Knox
When I was at Ft. Dix I had orders for Vietnam with the 11ACR only to have Nixion recall them. So I was assigned to the 14th ACR until the 11th came home and on to Germany. We then became the 11th ACR.
I rember places like Old Baldy and the Migian Trail were our homes away from home. I was 19 yrs. old when I got there and the youngest guy there. When I left I was 21 and the oldest in my group. Volar had started. I made Buck Sgt. in 20 months. I was proud of the job we were doing and I understood what we were doing there. Still did not like it being away from home, but it had to be done. If it were not my first unit I think I would not have been as successful in my career. I have yet to be in another unit where we treated our fellow soldiers as family and not just another soldier we work with. I thank the calvary for giving me an experience that I will never forget and one that I can share with my family and friends.

Hi

in the 70´s, I lived in Hammelburg, a small town near Bad Kissingen. There was a disco called Lions Club, the Germans called it Eisdiele ( in the 60´s it was a italian icecream bar). I knew a lot of people from the H company, because we met us every weekend in that disco. It was the only disco, where they played Rock music ( Stones, ZZ Top, Led Zeppelin etc.). It was from 74 - 76 that we had a lot of fun with our American friends. I only remember one´s name, Chuck, he came from Maine and left Germany 1976. I have visited Daley barracks several times to see my friends.

Great Website - it was good to see some of the names from the past - to include Mike Simms who was making reference to our Halloween Party in the Party House. Look forward to hear from some of the old Eaglehorse Troopers. By the way - COL Pittard commands the 3rd BDE, 1st Infantry Division in Vilseck Germany (and as of this posting he is in Kosovo with the BDE and will return to Vilseck this summer).

Thanks for sending this site to me via email. I have been contacted by Mark Federici and I have asked him about SGT. Mark Roper -H Co. 2/11th ACR. Roper served in this unit in Vietnam and BK. Steve Flood, the name sounds familiar......write if you like at: CEI_Industries@msn.com. I have some pictures, but I'll have to dig them out. I have some interesting border shots, as I spent a month on the border Dec76/Jan77.
Also, I have a great idea for keeping the Blackhorse alive.

PS: The salutation, which means "Let's go" is French. I am sorely disgusted with the way the French politicians are acting like they are so important in this Iraq issue. I say......LET'S GO AMERICA, LET'S GO!

Wow! A blast from the past. Ted Prescott (Der Adler), Vern Fuller (the "new" guy), Mike Simms, Rod Symons, Greg Castello -- LTs in crime. And, what can I say about Glynn Pope (Goddammit, LT -- Git over here! *spit*)? One of the best times of my life. Does anyone know where Rob Prudhomme, Dan Zajac, Ray Bednar, Tom Houston, Carlos Lobrado, or Lionel Ortiz are? Last time I talked with Lionel (in early 90's), he was in Florida working for a medical device company. (LTC) Dan Zajac was at NTC (Cobra07). Ted Prescott is in TX (I think). Ray Bednar was in Louisville, KY. There are dozens of others I'd like to catch up with. I can picture their faces, I just can't remember their names. Write me, guys.

Great site. Whoa! It was great to see some ole troopers names and photos. They brought back some hilarious memories- Mr. "Hook em' Horns" Symons - are you still igniting excess cheese charges by hand to assess your time in the sixty yard dash? G Troop reports to Opie in nothing but steel pots, LBE's, boxers, and boots - I didn't think you had the cahones - Job well done! You definitely made the experience a fun one. Retiring in 05? What is Lawrence Keely up to? Was Mike Simms that arian looking LT, who thought he had game on the gridion? Looking for Greg Yates, and Peter Williamson. Shock and awe Shock and awe.

This website found me. Just wanted to let any one who was stationed at Camp Phillip L. Lee there was such a person. He was kia in Viet Nam. Actually he was wounded on 4-17-71 and died from his wounds on 6-17-71. I was the plt. medic
Lt. Lee was my plt. leader.
Not only was he a good leader, but he was a good man. There are not many weeks in the year that I don't think about him.

It is with regret and great sorrow that we inform you that Clarence "Bud" Campbell, the creater and Webmaster of the Blackhorse.org website, has departed this Vale of Tears on Wednesday, August 27, 2003.

Mrs. Campbell's boy is no doubt walking through Fiddler's Green with a good cigar between his fingers and his faithful dog Duffy at his side.

Condolences can be sent to Bud's email address at bigbud@blackhorse.org as his family will be checking this account throughout the coming days.

Randy, you still got that photo of our flag football team with Rick Ward (aka ACE) as the coach? Brett, you are the one I knew at Benning in 1979, right? Drop me a note and we can go do a beer or two when I'm home... and I'll extend to you a special invitation to the next Louie Louie Festival in Tacoma, plus the old NW Rock bands weeknd-long reunion concert at Lake Cushman, both in August 2004, and are family oriented events (this isn't the 60's any longer). We have all the old band members back together and do these annual concerts. I think you'll be impressed with one of our old singers, Sue Isekite. wow! what an excellent website! I saw many names that I recognize. Brownell, this guy made the E-9 list in sixteen years, a true Cavalry Trooper. Bill Krenceski aka "K-dog" where are you at now a days? Rumgay aka "rummy". Joseph Schmidt do I have some stories about you. When I arrived at G Troop as a Private, and you where a Spec 4, you treated us like dirt, subhuman. George Hayward my buddy, probably in Iraq with 4ID still in a Cav unit! Boris Tapia my favorite Eaglehorse medic. and yes I did know Bowers, I think he was one of our Mortars in G Troop! Being a Blackhorse Trooper was the Sh*t! We had a blast and trained hard. if you see this and remember me sling me an email.

What is this with the wings? While viewing the guest book I dfound Sgt Dana Neal. Whats up sarge. I havenrt seen you in almost 30 years. Its good to know that you are OK. If you can't remember me, I was the loader on G-24 and then the gunner in G-26 when you were the TC of G-22 if I recall correctly. There is a photo (ID No. 454) sent by Frank Shray regarding the commanders circa 1975 for which he identified the commander and asked the name of the others. I was serving with the Squadron at the time and I recognize all of them but only remember the name of some, so here it goes.
Seated 2nd from right is the CO of G troop when I arrived at the Squadron. I çan't recall his name.
Standing, third from left is (I believe) the CO of H troop.
Standing fourth from left is Capt. Lind the next CO of G troop. And last, but definitely not least, standing, first from right is the squadron's Sgt. Major. I do not recall his last name, but everyone called him "The Shaft". He could be anywhere, anytime. I saw him chew out officers, NCOs and enlisted men with equal gusto. His repertoire of adjectives was unbelievable and his memory unfallible. He was famous for the work given those slackers and recipients of a field grade Article 15 that were sent to the "Sgt. Majors Detail".
His mere presence nearby would bring instantaneous peace to any quarrel.
Our old horse looked better without the wings and with a properly curled tail. (Ask any Trooper from the '70s to explain "the properly curled tail" bit)
Nevertheless, Merry Christmass to all troopers, past and present!

Wow, blast from the past! Hell, I'M in a couple of those pics! But then again Lt Prescott was my platoon leader! (or was it Cpt, Trp cammander?) If anyone remembers, I was the loader that had his right leg eaten by the turrent monster on the platoon battle run at Graf. But I remember SSG Reed, and Sgt Dodson (Stan, my wife, Lydia, still likes you!)That was under the SFC Bubb and Albright era. Then I remember SFC Guy Kukowski as my Plt Sgt as I ETS's out! (AFTER I had my second extension denied!) When I was under going reconstructive surgery I was in S-1 for a while, and the mail room. Coolest story to tell. was bore sighting at Graf, over those little lakes, and seeing 1SG Arnold's jeep just outside the range markers and him with pole in hand Fishing! Funniest quote, "GOD I hate luitenants! Hell, I couldn't stand myself as a luitenant!" (Maj Pope) I see someone got a photo of "lets catch a dose off the same girl twice just to make sure it was her" Hyder! Great Site! Spent 11 years in before the surgeries that put my leg back together wore out, and was medically discharged, but I wouldn't trade those 4+ years with the Eagles, and Blackhorse, for nothing!

I was reading about the changes that have occured in BK and was looking over the photos. There is was, F33, the Fireball Express, my Sheridan for those three years. John Skirmont posted the photo. I am on the right. Cpl Crone is sitting on the vehicle. Crone was top gunner that year. He had been my gunner for two years but when Sgt Hale became our platoon sergeant he went to Hale's crew. Skirmont replaced Rabon. Fireball Express always had turret problems. It was named Fireball Express in 1975 when my driver left his hatch open and was taking photos during a stationary range. He never heard the fire command and got a fireball in his lap. Sgt Hale's death was sad. He died in Graf during Table VIII. Lots on memories on this site.

I was a military wife and will never forget BK. I had studied German in HS for 3 years and always wanted to visit Germany. As a result, my husband received orders there and I was so excited. I was there when the Berlin Wall came down. We had to leave early because our son was diagnosed with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, when I was air vac to Walter Reed AMC. It was very devastating to leave so quickly. I will never forget all the German friends I met there because I spent a lot of time on the economy meeting Germans. I tried to learn more of the language . I loved our little community and was also very active making signage and designing bulletin boards etc. I met some nice Americans as well. While there my husband was deployed to Kuwait after the war. It was overall a very nice experience and I enjoy reading the history about BK and seeing all the old photos and reading the stories.Thank you to all the contributors. Is it true that the parade field once had an undeground bunker used by the Germans? I believe I translated something to that effect in the old gym there by an elevator shaft( I believed it to be a tunnel to the bunker) A friend who was in the German army stationed there during the war confirmed this for me. Is it true? Thank you. Suzan Norton

Jerry Olsen did you finally decide to retire? Last time I seen you was at FT Sill. I was a medic in HHT from 1985-1988. I was the senior medic for both Fox and Echo troops plus ran the aid station. I will have to find my box of photos from my time in the 2/11. I have shots of Camp Lee, OP TN, and many on the border itself. I never went out on patrol without my camrea. I even have shots of the aid station at Camp Lee. I loved being in the 2nd and have not in my 20 years in the army fround another unit just like it. I still today wear my spurs on my heels and my unit crest under my lapel on my dress blues during dining ins or outs. Well if you remember me email me at rsmitleyjr@sbcglobal.net. Well hello everyone!! Nice to see some names I remember, Sheppard, Olsen, Pettoff, and a few others. I think I'm still hung over from all the trips downtown. I have tons of pictures and memories, and also a a video tape of our deployment and time spent at Camp Doha Kuwait it has the famous explosion on it and tons of other good footage. If anyone would be interested in a copy I would gladly send you one. I also have some video of Daily Barracks, Downtown B.K. and the surrounding area, and yes!! I do have the video of Scott Radamacher all painted up. For anyone on here that was a Hawg during 1989-1991 and dosen't remember me "KID LAZER" Qualified Top Tank in Squadron on TTVlll as a PFC GUNNER, I only wanted to add that in hopes that Capt. Green at that time, would read this and recall who I was cause I always wanted to tell him "Kiss my Ass, SIR!!" Hope to jar some memories and maybe receive an e-mail or two from some old TTTTT-Tanker buddies. Hawgs, 14 strong SIR...

My father served in HHT (SFC Ronald Sutherland)and we lived in Daley Village.I attended BK Elementary school, thereafter Schweinfurt Jr.High.Your site brings back a lot of memories, growing up in BK.I had some great friends there;Gary,Tom,Ricky,Butch and all the rest.Any of you guys out there? Our Boy Scout meetings were held in the Mess hall building, anyone out there who was in Raccoon patrol,Troop 133? Your feature about the Sherman tank was interesting because we entered the tank a few times before the hatches were padlocked.I remember that the dials on the radio unit to the left of the drivers position were in French. It is sad to see how Daley Barracks looks now. Does anyone remember the bookshop between the theater and the DYA? I also vividly remember the library and recreation center. We used to listen to the young GIs making music there;R&R,R&B and C&W. I also recall how the German librarian used to throw out GIs for sleeping in the library. BK was a great place to grow up in and I like to thank you for the real grand job you're doing with this site. Maybe, if you're interested, I'll contribute a 'Army Brat' perspective of BK. Keep up the work.

I served in the 11th ACR from Dec 1959 - Apr 1962 in Straubing, Germany. Regimental HQ. and 1st Batallion were located in Straubing, 2nd Battalion was at Landshudt while the 3rd Battalion was at Regensburg. The 11th ACR saw it share of border duty didn't it?

After six (6) years in the Army I finally wised up and enlisted in the US Air Force.

I returned to Europe in September 2004 to attend the 60th Anniversary Ceremonies for "Operation Market Garden" in the Netherlands. Drove to BK towards the end of our trip and the changes in BK were staggering. Almost nothing left of Daley Barracks shopping centers everywhere! Had time to eat at the "Brasserie" down in the town square, thankfully it had not changed at all. Stayed at the Sonnen Hugel Hotel for several days, it's just as nice as it ever was. Lots of memories came flooding back to me during my return to BK. Will post some pics when I can find the time.

Hey troopers, remember, w/out Supt Plt you had no fuel to move and no ammo to shoot s#*t up!!
Man, this site was a blast from the past.Loved the pics. Spent alot of time @ Camp Lee, Wildfleckon, Graff, and Hoensfells. Kinda spent more time on the road than I did @ Bad Kissingen.
But then the day came that I lost my license, and I became the HHT orderly room clerk (is that such a thing?) Learned alot (still can't type tho') workin' for Topp Swan / Capt "Dougy Fresh" Hocking / Lt Keely. Really like to hear from these guys if they don't mind "fraternizing" w/ an enlisted man (lol).
Saw Manu's post and like to hear from her (sorry about Kenny), Also anyone else that served in the HHT (sqd mnt, Trp Mnt, S1, S2, S3, S4, Cooks, or Spt Plt 1985-1988.. Drop me a line @

Iniatially assigned to H Company under SSG Harris working with the CEV's and AVLB's. Moved to HHT when a position opened up in the Border Operations Center. My final tribute to the Squadron was the mural painted on the outside of the BOC. SSG Richard Badal took the photo and submitted a right up to the Black Horse paper in Sept 78. This site brings back memories long forgotten, tears and joy. Thanks guys and shout out to Sammy Carlson who brought the site to my attention.

Just a comment on the French Comando course, which you have on your website,i attened the course in May of 1990.

We were a rag tag group from the BAOR (british Army on the Rhine )made up of volunteers from the British army air corp, transportation regiments, engineers, clerks and anyone else who wanted a break from British army barrack life in Northern Germany.
I was in command, rank of Staff Sergeant, as the officer who should have attened the course with our group had dropped out. The french officers and snco·s found our arrival amusing because they normally expect elite field force military units to attend.

However, as always the underdogs tend to bond quickly, and to my surprise, and complete dismay to our competiters, we won the award as the best overall military team.

It was a very pround moment to see all our NATO friends national flags flying togather at the awards graduation. And as our attached french nco interpreter, who spoke perfect american english by the way! said we are all soldiers no matter what military unit we belong to.

August of 1990, 3 months after the course, we would all find ourselves in the deserts of Kuwait/Iraq...but thats another story.

For those of you who knew me then, probably wouldn't find it hard to believe that, I stumbled into this site. This has brought back many memories. Camp Lee, OP Sierra(Sh**house), Graf, Wildflecken, Daley Barracks, Mama Heinz, the stupid rabbits all over the place, TTS's, upper hard stand, lower hard stand, the Rock Horse, Big Ben, US Patrol, Don't walk down the sidewalk, Stand By, the Grenze, and my head is still swimmimg from this site. What really sticks out in my mind is the first year we did the troop fights. H Co vs I Trp, the XO, 1LT Schill went Bad Hersfeld and stole I Troop's guidon. Then CPT Steele takes a picture of the whole company showing I Troop, "They're number one." Then the actual fight and the climatic ending of the battle. Can't make stuff like that up. I feel honored to have served in 2/11th ACR and to have known some best tankers, scouts, mechanics, and fellow cav troopers in the Army. I hope those of you who knew are sitting down when you read this. I'm currently a civilian employee for the Army Reserve, I run a repair shop(AMSA #76 BMA) in Webster, NY.
