For a number of reasons US dollars were tightly controlled in Germany. Troops were paid in Military Script, Ed Keaney recalls, " ... it was only good on post, PX etc. But you could exchange it for German marks, on post ... four marks twenty pfennigs for a dollar. If you had somebody in the states send you American dollars, you could get about double your money. A carton of cigarettes or a pound of coffee each cost a dollar. The price in Bad K for these items was twenty marks. Cigarettes & coffee were rationed. Every body on post would wait for new guys & non smokers & buy there ration cards." | |
